I really don't know how to thank you for your blog(s). I first started reading cake wrecks when my daughter was born with health problems and was in the NICU. From there I found your blog and, while we didn't go through nearly what you did with James, your strength and faith helped me get through that difficult time. (By the way, my first-born is also James). Then this past December my son was born early and we faced yet another NICU stay. I turned to your blog to help me remember that I will get through it.
And, I'm happy to say after reading these posts, we have switched to cloth diapers for our two youngest kids. The diapers look so cute and comfortable on Valor and your confidence inspired me. We are loving it! And so are the kids. Here's our miracle baby Bruce in one of his new dipes: http://tinyurl.com/2bf4ed7

Due to memories of science project volcanoes, I have never used baking soda and vinegar together in a diaper load, but vinegar is frequently recommended to help strip stinky dipe smells. I have used it for this purpose with some success, and have found it to be miraculously helpful in removing (laundry detergent type) scents from hand-me-down clothing.

Abby, the clean diapers don't smell like the RG scent once they are clean?

I don't understand anything my father in law just said, but I know that volcanos have lava, which reminded me that VALOR EDWARDS is an anagram of RED LAVA SWORD. I keep wanting to make another double crostic.

I probably won't be the only one to comment re Patti's baking soda + vinegar hypothesis. As she noted baking soda (= sodium bicarbonate) is a mild base and can be useful in removing acidic stains (i.e., that react with a base). Vinegar (dilute acetic acid) is an acid and is useful if treating stains that are basic in nature (i.e., that react with an acid).
They certainly could be used sequentially, that is: use one, rinse the item, then use the other. But it is almost certain that if they were used simultaneously they would preferentially react with one another, in a neutralization reaction.
Interestingly, baking soda and vinegar, mixed together, provide the driving force for something sometimes seen in a science fair, called a "chemical volcano." See for instance: http://chemistry.about.com/od/chemicalvolcanoes/ss/volcano.htm.
While a volcano in a washing machine may be a snazzy TV comercial, I don't think many of us would want an eruption in our laundry rooms. (Actually it would take more than just vinegar and baking soda.)

Good job, Abby! We still love our cloth, and it's been almost 7 years. I wish I knew how much money we've saved so far...I have 2 in diapers full time right now and one only at night.

Thanks for the detergent recommendation. I just ordered and received my first batch of Rockin Green detergent. I've been having some mild stinkiness issues with my fuzzi buns and bumgenius diapers. Hopefully this will help. :)

Yayyyyyyyyyyy! I love to hear another friend obsessing over cloth diapers! Must seem so weird to the uninitiated, but once you've joined the dark side you understand!

Thanks, Sierra! I feel like it's about the only contribution to the blog that I've made in about a month or more. The last picture we had Valor looked so shrimpy, and he's definitely grown since then.

White vinegar is a mild acid and baking soda is alkaline. Maybe you can combine that info with the info you have about diaper poop and diapers in general, to figure something out using those?
Baking soda is also a gentle safe mild abrasive.
